"Grace" was a gift to me. Nearly every summer I attend a sumi-e workshop in northern Minnesota held by my teacher, Susan Frame. It’s a week-long intense immersion; instruction, on location sketching and painting, demonstrations, gorgeous scenery and lots of time spent painting in the studio. That year I worked all week but had nothing to show for it, nothing that was worth all my time and effort. I was tired, frustrated and a little depressed as I compared myself to everyone else who had beautiful paintings to show off. I finally stepped out of the classroom to go for a walk outside and clear my head. Grand Marais is a quaint little town on the shores of Lake Superior – beauty everywhere. When I returned to the studio refreshed, I lifted my brush to this piece that I had been working on… and grace fell down. I don’t really remember working on it, I just remember looking up at one point and it was finished with the perfect combination of brush, ink and Asian mineral colors. Grace came to me and through me on this one.
